It's been a year of ups and downs no doubt about it, though the good outweighs the bad!
In August I had my first day of school. I was ready for new challenges and experiences. I met a bunch of awesome(!) people and some of them have become my very close friends. They've change my life in a way I didn't know possible.
I maintained a good GPA and I was very positive about everything.
In December my attitude towards my school changed, I didn't feel like the school had their things together and I didn't feel comfortable leaving my education and - to some extend - my future in their hands. This lead to a transfer of schools in March. It was the right decision for me, I'm sure of that, but it was tough in more than one sense. I had to make my way into the circles of friends that had already been made and I had to catch up on classes I hadn't signed up for at my former school.
The last few weeks I've been a nervewreck. Not knowing which classes I had to take finals in exams in feels awful. It all ended up pretty well, though. I have caught up on the things that needed catching up, I've gained a few friends as well and I'm glad I've made the decisions I have.
During this year I've had some pretty crazy experiences, I've shared innumerous laughs and smiles and I have learned to appreciate the people around me in an entirely different way than I did formerly.
On the contrary, I've been frustrated, I've been tired of studying and being set aside. But in the end that's not what matters. It's the good things that need to be rembered. Who cares about the bad stuff in 10 years anyway?
One year down, two to go. 2nd G. here I come. I'm ready.Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-46622405824684366912012-05-08T21:42:00.001+02:002012-05-08T21:43:36.821+02:00PrejudicesIdeally every new aquaintenceship should start off with nothing but your first impression of the person. Sometimes prejudices tend to take over, though.

Last week I spent an evening with some of my new classmates. I ended up spending most of it talking to this one person and I really had a good time. The conversation just seemed to be going effortlessly, you know. It was one of those people you're just really comfortable with.
It was the first time we actually spent together, thus it was the first time I got to get an impression of this, now, friend of mine. I really appreciated the fact that I knew absolutely nothing of the person beforehand as I didn't have any expectations of the conversation when it started. We started from scratch and kinda ended there as well. When I went home I still knew nothing of their way of living or life outside of school.

Today, when I was in class I overheard a converstation between some of the guys. They were discussing what to do after school and ended up talking about their homes. Suddenly it dawned on me that the person I was talking to days before was actually a rich-kid. Had I known this during our conversation before I would've taken an entirely different approach to it. I would've had opinions about their life before I even got to know the person.
Suddenly I realized how much I really appreciated starting from scratch again. I realized that it's actually a blessing to get that opportunity - to just talk without any prejudices to start off with. Maybe I should try that more often. Instead of worrying about their status in society I should just sit down, talk, and have a good time. Lesson learned.

So to talk about something entirely different; here are some pictures from my walk the other day.

Though I absolutely love music, the whole music blog thing is just not working out for me (obviously).
In order to change my current blogging spirit I've decided to not just blog about music anymore and instead do a more mainstream kind of blog.

I realised this yesterday as I was editing some pictures. I was sitting there feeling that the whole editing process was kind of unecessary as no one would see them anyway. (Yay for my generation's constant need for confirmation and fame.)

Denmark only has like 20 days of good weather every year, the remaining 345 days consist of cold, rainy, windy weather. Yesterday was one of the good days leaving this summer with 19 days of nice weather.
Wait, who is that?
I don't know if I've been living in a hole somewhere or what has happened, but I didn't know about this guy until today, which is a shame really. He popped up on Youtube and I noticed his song called Queen of Denmark. I know it's kind of tacky that the only reason I clicked the song was because of a song title, but I am a proud Dane, nonetheless. (It turns out he's quite fond of Denmark and the Danish language himself - he deserves some kind of respect for that in itself)

I listened to the song with a somewhat skeptical approach, but I was positively surprised. His enchanting, deep voice tells about his rough life, but not in a way that will make you, as a listener, depressed. I'm not saying his music is easy listening, it's not at all. He grew up in a loving environment, but he didn't fit in. His family was Christian, he was a homosexual and still is. As he went around with this enormous secret he became an alcoholic and a drug addict, which almost caused him to turn to suicide. Luckily Midlake was there to pick him up and make him write about his feelings.

This being said, it's obvious why his lyrics are so melancholic, but he tries to twist the saddening songs with a little humor and I think he succeeded. Today, he's okay with himself. At least, that's what I get from reading all the interviews I just read. I basically find him an amazing man!
Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-91379364229947456942011-11-21T08:50:00.000+01:002011-11-21T08:50:00.532+01:00Treefight For SunlightPicture: Politiken.dk
As a Dane, I think it's so important to appreciate the new and upcoming Danish musicians because they're so very talented! There are so many musicians whom people don't know, because it's tough to get your name out there. That's where Treefight for Sunlight comes into the picture.
Treefight for Sunlight consists of four guys and they first became known with the single "Facing the Sun" in 2010. Happy sounding vibes and uplifting choruses characterizes the band's music. Piano tunes make up a lot of the sound Treefight for Sunlight is known for, and this is especially seen on the track "What Became of You and I" as it's starts of with a melody that can only make you happy. The psychedelic pop oozes of inspiration from the 60's and it really just reminds me of a sunny afternoon that gives only the best reasons for being in a good mood.

Listen to the sweet sounding tunes right here:

Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-27955192810142860742011-11-19T13:34:00.001+01:002011-11-19T13:34:00.772+01:00Kashmir - Katalogue
The cover says it itself; "A banded-picked selection of defining songs". Defining. In my opinion it couldn't be more true that the songs on this album truly defines Kashmir. I also think it's a good portrait of band as of where they've come from to where they've ended up.

Picture: Sony Music

I might not be the right person to review an album like this, as I am a huge fan of these guys and it's absolutely impossible for me to view the album objectively. Of course they've chosen songs like "Rocket Brothers" and "Mommy in Love, Daddy in Space" to be on the album, Kashmir wouldn't be the same without those songs.
It's really nice how they picked a live performance from DM in rock from '93 since it was the year they were discovered and got a record deal.

This album shows diversity without overshadowing the core of Kashmir. It portrays a lot of the milder music they've written in the later years but they remember not to forget what they once were, which is good.

Considering that these guys have been together for 20 years blows me away. Many bands split up after just a few years, but Kashmir must understand the phrase "through good times and through bad times". I know they're not actually married but spending as much time together as they have, their relationship has to show some sides of a long marriage. If you, as I, have watched a documentary about the band you'll know that not every day is a bed on roses, but writing songs together, recording music together, touring together, and traveling together has got to take its toll on anyone.

I'm proud of Kashmir! They've been together as a band for longer than I've lived and I've only been a fan of them for less than half my life. I'm impressed and they should truly be role models for anyone who's dreaming of success in the music business. Thumbs up from me!

Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-87783902987993880812011-11-17T19:04:00.002+01:002011-11-17T19:31:54.914+01:00Foster the People - Live!Last night I went to Copenhagen. Not just Copenhagen, but Vega: Main Hall. I had my ticket ready and I went inside, showed it to security and went up the stairs.
1 hour and a warm up band later a familiar beat started off Houdini. "Whatcha want, whatcha need, whatcha come here for?" and I knew that that was what I had come for.

Mark Foster (vocals) knew how to keep the attention of the many people at Vega. The concert sounded like it was recorded, it was that good. When his sweet voice didn't stream through the speakers he spoke to the audience. And it wasn't the classical "Thank you, you're awesome! Denmark's the best place ever". He really spoke about meaningful things. He told the reason for writing "Call it What You Want" - a great story BTW.

When they'd played all songs from their album they went off the stage - that is, they hadn't done "Pumped Up Kicks". For a moment I was truly worried they wouldn't play the song that made me fall in love with them. But two minutes later they came running on the stage and they did "Pumped Up Kicks" justice. They even found a way to mix it with the dubstep remix of the song.

The concert was beyond my expectations! If you ever have a chance to experience them live you should! They might not have spectacular lights or 10 back-up singers like some big artists do but if they did it would have ruined the entire concert. It was so intimate, yet it felt like a huge concert hall. I loved it!
Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-70879922888730631902011-10-31T14:03:00.000+01:002011-10-31T14:03:00.528+01:00CHLLNGRI don't know if you've heard the name CHLLNGR before. I know I hadn't until he warmed up for When Saints Go Machine in Kolding. I watched him go on stage and I was thinking "who's this guy? I like his shirt" and then he started working his synth. I honestly didn't know you could play a synth the way he did it - jumping around not standing still even for a split second. And then, out of the blue, he says "okay, I'm gonna change it up a bit" and he sure did! After 20 minutes of pure synth and voice comes a saxophone - yeah who would've known? He really rocked it!

CHLLNGR or Steve Borth II really knows his stuff. He's from America and now lives in Copenhagen. I can't even begin to explain how awesome it is for an American guy to come to Denmark to produce music!

The music has just the right beat and sound, and it's amazing how he some beats can be way off and still sound great. I was spell bound by the deep bass throughout his numbers.

Listen to the delicate bass right here http://www.facebook.com/#!/CHLLNGR?sk=wallNannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-22702893488722707232011-10-28T16:45:00.003+02:002011-10-28T17:20:39.630+02:00When Saints Go MachineWhen Saints Go Machine is a Danish band worth a listen. Last night I went to on of their concerts at Pitstop in Kolding and I was simply blown away.

When Saints Go Machine are 4 guys from Copenhagen. They started out in 2007 and have realeased and EP and two albums since then, the latest being "Konkylie" this year.

I've always liked certain songs of theirs, but I haven't been a hardcore listener. Lets just say last night changed my mind completely. It's no secret that I haven't been good a blogging since I started school, simply because I've been buried in assignments, but this concert made me think "I have to make the time for blogging".

Anyhow, last light was awesome. I was mesmerized by the beat in their music and everyone went crazy when "Kelly" and "Church and Law" started playing. And if there's something I love about musicians it's when you can tell how they just love what they're doing. That was the case with When Saints Go Machine, they became one with the music just like the audience.

Okay, Pitstop is a small place to do a concert so it isn't hard to reach the audience, but I haven't tried anything like the concert last night, they were simply awesome. They were so good I don't even have anything negative to say, they were worth the 100 kr I payed, and more!

If you don't know these four guys here's a link or two.

Kelly by When Saints Go Machine

Go like them on Facebook and get a free download as well!Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-83228726625916436712011-08-31T12:11:00.002+02:002011-08-31T19:04:06.859+02:00Bon iver, Bon iverI apologize that this is in Danish, but it was an assignment for a Danish class so I'm just gonna put it on here since I hardly ever have time to blog anymore.

This amazing indie rock soundtrack features, among others, Sonic Yotuh and The Kinks. I like how the movie is about the music almost as much as it's about the pregnant teenager, Juno. You should definitely check it out if you didn't already, you're in for a ride!

It's all about the music and not about the lyrics at all. He's a post-rock music composer but with great knowledge in classical music

He's incredibly talented which is very obvious when listening to his latest album "Right Sides". Piano, synth, guitar, bass, drums, harpsichord, organ, and bells are just the instruments used on this album, but if you look further into his music more instruments will appear.

Webzine "people are people" by Cheryl Santa Maria (http://cherylsantamaria.com/blog/?p=3189) says "Instrumental music is like reading a book, whereas a song that relies on lyrics is more like watching a film." and I couldn't agree more. They go on explaining how books rely entirely on the imagination and allows much more interpretation whereas whatching a film is more likely to tell you what to feel. When Jordi Clapés-Bot starts playing you have to rely on your imagination but in return you get carried away by beautiful emotions.

Listen to and buy his music here: http://jordiclapes-bot.bandcamp.com/

Right Sides by Jordi Clapés-BotNannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-91688888894003701322011-07-30T20:00:00.008+02:002011-07-31T15:20:06.196+02:00Slow Loris

Just yesterday I read about this guy Slow Loris. But it makes me sad when people tell me how they found this website that makes free music available illegally, so to prevent that I've made a list of websites that offer music legal and free. No, you might not find all the big and famous artists on there, but if you want to listen to their music so bad, look them up on YouTube or buy their music.

http://noisetrade.com/

Noise Trade has an amazing concept. Fairtrade music. You can simply pay what you think the artist deserves, and if you don't feel like supporting with money you can share the album on Facebook or Twitter. This concept allows the artists to share their music without being signed to a record label and still make money. http://soundcloud.com/
SoundCloud is another great concept. As an artist you can upload finished as well as unfinished tracks, make them available for downloading or you can leave them there simply for people to listen to. As a music lover simply enter a genre, artist, or whatever you feel like in the search bar and explore a world of music.

http://bandbase.dk/

Band Base is a Danish website that allows new Danish musicians to upload their music for people to download, or for big artists to show their new music. The newer the artist the more likely that their music is available for free.

http://bandcamp.com

Band Camp is pretty much the same concept as Band Base, or maybe Band Base is the same concept as Band Camp. They basically offer the same thing, nonetheless.

I'd say these websites give you a big opportunity to support the artist you like listening to, so do me a favor and listen to legal music.
Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-24108757268202669942011-07-29T13:00:00.002+02:002011-07-29T13:00:08.537+02:00"New" inspiring bandsI thought I'd make another top ten, just for the fun of it. They came together even though two of the members had success in another band and now they're rocking together

Listen to one of their song on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXswKpViPgg

8:Poema. Two sisters came together to play music, and it turned out pretty good. If you're not sure how the boy of your dreams act, just listen to Boys&Bugs.

7: The Vivian Girls is probably the "oldest" band on this list, taking that they formed their band in 2007. Anyhow, these NYC girls play music that's worth listening to.

6: Kiss Me Scarlet. They are actually Danish and spent the summer playing at music festivals. I'm proud to call myself Danish when I listen to these guys.

5: Sail By the Stars. He's a one man band who named a song "Icebergs Are for Penguins", just the name makes him worth listening to.

Show your support here:http://www.purevolume.com/new/sailbythestars there's even a free download.

4: Josh Garrels. This guy isn't exactly new to music either, but I feel like not enough people know about his music, which is a waste.

Download his recent album right here for free: http://joshgarrels.bandcamp.com/

3: BandeTogBandet. This trio is another band from Denmark, and they really know how to compose music in a beautiful way.

Listen to and download their music here: http://soundcloud.com/djalnor/join-in-on-a-sunday

2:The Civil Wars. They met each other during a song writing sessions, and decided to write together, which, in my opinion, was a great decision.

If you don't know it yet, listen to Barton Hollow here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrOUwbsy12E

1: Foster the People. Okay, they're not exactly new either, they've been around since 2009, but they just released their first album this spring.

This is just one song of many, do me a favor and listen to some more

Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-27496788124965501882011-07-28T12:48:00.001+02:002011-07-28T12:48:00.181+02:00Music for your moodHave you ever been sitting around feeling totally depressed not knowing who or what to turn to in order to be comforted? Or maybe everyone is trying to cheer you up and all you really want is to stay in the state you're in?

Do you remember that one time you were in you're best mood, and you needed something to hold onto, to always remember why you were in such a great mood?Maybe you just needed to seek inspiration in something but you needed that one thing that will always inspire you?

I might just have you're answer. It sounds so cliché, but turn to music. I can almost certainly guarantee you that it will have your answer no matter what feelings you're dealing with. There's so much music out there and if you look long enough someone will have written a song that fits your situation to perfection.

I remember the day my paternal grandmother died. I'd spent the night at my friends's house and I came home to my mom telling me that there was something I needed to know. She asked me to sit down on my bed and she sat down beside me. We sat there for a few moments and she looked at me and told me the most unbearable sentence I've heard in my life. "Grandma is dead". I was in shock and all I could manage to say before I broke down crying was "That is so unfair". She had just been cured of cancer, and had gone to the doctor with stomach aches. A few days later she was rushed to the hospital, was diagnosed with cancer again and died a few days later.

That day I really learned how to turn to music. I was only 12 year old 5th grader at the time, but the first thing I did when I found myself able to move was put on a CD. I turned to one track and put it on repeat. The song was "Slipped Away" by Avril Lavigne and if I remember correctly the song is dedicated to her own grandpa. Every now and then I put on that song in memory of my grandmother, because it truly helped me cope with her death. I miss her everyday and try to live my life to make her proud.

My point with this story is, that even though it might sound super cliché, music really does help you if your brain just shuts down until a certain feeling is bearable again.

I don't just have that one song I turn to. I have inumerable songs that remind me of happy moments in my life, or songs I turn to if I need to feel happy. I know songs that will make me sad and I know songs that will inspire me.

Owl City is one of the artists I turn to when I'm happy or if I need to feel happier. His music takes me away from reality for the duration of a track, and two of his songs takes me back to really great times of my life. I look up to him as an artist, he's Christian which comforts me in such a great way. I look up to him as a blogger, he really knows how to draw me in, in his writings. I look up to him as a person, because he really is just a person like you and I.

I could go on and on with musicians that inspire me and so on, but I'll spare you and let you start finding your own soundtracks of your lives.

Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-92134157244636667152011-07-27T12:02:00.002+02:002011-07-27T12:13:44.468+02:00Being obliviousIf you're as oblivious as I can be at times, you might not know that iTunes has free downloads either. Maybe I'm the only person with internet access and an interest in music who didn't know about that cool feature, but if you're sitting out there thinking "what the heck is she talking about?" here's an explanation:

A few months ago I was roaming around iTunes Store, looking for music that might interest me. The word "indie" always attracks my attention so I ended up in the category "Indie Spotlight". I get to looking around, buy some music and this awesome word comes into view. "FREE". Music is great, but free, legal, music is even greater!

Every week iTunes has a number of free downloads, each in a specific category or genre. They do this in order to make new artists known or to help promote a band's new album. All you have to do, is create an iTunes account and start downloading! Who knows, you might actually expand your artistic horizon, I know I did.Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-5848812605736538582011-07-25T14:11:00.003+02:002011-07-25T14:33:46.516+02:00One of those daysDo you know the feeling of every single tiny molecule of inspiration and creativty somehow left your body? Well, that's how I feel today. I picked up my ukulele and my fingers were stuck on the same 4 chords. Then I tried to listen to some music, but nothing really sounded good. Last, I played around on my guitar and slowly, very slowly, I came up with something that sounded decent. I guess it's just one of those days today.

I don't know if I should just stop trying so hard or if I should push myself until the molecules somehow find their way back to my body. It's so lonely without them.
I've come to the conclusion, that for now, I'm just going to keep looking for a song that fits my mood and hopefully I'll be able to think in creative lines again.

Somehow, I have to give you guys some kind of insight in my world of music today, so I'm going to tell you about Kashmir, my all time favorite band.

Their music speaks for itself, and sometimes I can't comprehend how they manage to come up with music that sounds like it does. They're most famous song is probably "Rocket Brothers". It was the first song I heard by them. I was sitting in my living room, and the music video came up on some music channel. I was so fascinated by the whole story the video presented, two brothers building a rocket, and suddenly one of them killed the other in an attempt to make a living robot. I think I shed a tear.

I can't name a favorite song by them, but Mouthful of Wasps and Aftermath are definitely two very good ones. Check them out!Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-15398395403447645092011-07-24T16:53:00.000+02:002011-07-24T16:53:15.611+02:00Favorite of the week

The week has come to an end, which means it's time for at favorite of the week.
This Sunday, it's Editors - No Sound But The Wind. I don't remember where I first heard it, but I fell in love as soon as he started playing. I find this song incredibly beautiful! Enjoy.Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-51546625092573654412011-07-24T14:57:00.002+02:002011-07-24T15:17:15.530+02:00Amy WinehouseYesterday I got a sad message, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home. Winehouse breathed life into the soul genre, and did a good job doing so. I assume that most everyone knew her song "Rehab", a song about herself which encapsulated her life in a way I haven't seen an artist do it before.

Though, I wouldn't desribe myself as a fan of Amy Winehouse, I feel like the world of music lost an influential woman yesterday. I hope musicians will seek inspiration in her music in the future, and that she won't sink into oblivion.

She wasn't a rolemodel in her behavior, but she most definitely was in her music. She will be missed, I'm sure.

Picture from Sweetlyrics.com

Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2675213236940694515.post-3690346757688740632011-07-23T11:55:00.003+02:002011-07-23T12:16:11.550+02:00Grøn KoncertWell, there really isn't a translation to "Grøn Koncert". It would be "Green Concert", but that doesn't make much sense if you aren't a Dane anyway.

Grøn Koncert is a Danish music festival. It travels around Denmark for about a week and a half, staying in each town one day at a time. They have somewhere between 6 and 8 Danish artists peforming each year.

This year it was Dúné, Medina, De Eneste To, Tim Christensen, Kato & friends, TV2, Kashmir, and Nik&Jay. I was late due to camp activites so I missed out on Dúné, which is one of my favorite bands. Anyhow, I had a great day even though I didn't like most of the music. Somehow, Kashmir amazed once again. They always peform 100%, they're so dedicated to what they do.

We were lucky with the weather, it was incredibly cloudy but not one single drop of rain hit the ground all day. This made the day a little better, of course.

In general the artists understood how to peform without the audience getting bored, so overall it was a great day,Nannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02197801058897837485noreply@blogger.com0
